Highlights
Cusco, Peru, the ancient capital of the Incas, is one of the three most important destinations when touring in South America. The main touristic destination of Peru, the Inca city of Cusco was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. Within its streets live the original sites filled with Inca traditions and Spanish legends. Relive history as you stroll through Cusco’s picturesque cobblestone streets, surrounded by the myths and mysteries of its Inca temples and palaces, and the bloody history of the battle for survival between the Incas and the Spaniards. Present day Cusco, which is the result of a blending of two worlds, is a fascinating must-visit destination while in Peru.

This journey through the history of the Incas visits the most important archeological sites in and around Cusco city, and begins when you will be picked up from your accommodation at 1:30 pm.
The first attraction on the city tour will be the Cathedral, located in the center of the city. This religious sanctuary is the iconic structure of the Plaza de Armas and is the heart of Christianity in Cusco city. Get to know the history of Christianity in the Andes through canvases painted by the most important artists in Cusco at the time of the Spanish arrival.
After you have toured the cathedral in the company of your guide, you will head by foot (15 minutes’ walk) via the historical streets of Cusco to visit the Inca temple of QORICANCHA. This archeological site is home to some of the finest examples of Inca masonry existing today. Be amazed by the Inca knowledge of math, astronomy, and engineering, and enjoy the artistic value of this stunning place.
After visiting two of the most important sites in the center of Cusco, it’s time to take a car up to the surrounding countryside (25 minutes) to explore the most important Inca archaeological sites that surround Cusco city (Sacsahuaman, Qenqo, Pucapucara and Tambomachay).
The first site outside of Cusco on this half-day Classic – Cusco City Tour will be Sacsayhuaman, a spectacular park of monoliths made of granite. You will observe the ancient architecture as you walk among the enormous stone temple forming the shape of a bolt of lightning.
The second place to visit is Qenqo, a mysterious cave believed to have been used by the ancient Inca priests for the practice of different cults, and observation of celestial bodies and events which were important in the Andean religion.
The third site will be Tambomachay, a site home to the Inca fountains representing fertility. You can appreciate more Inca architecture, different styles of Inca construction, and the altars where the Incas kept their mummies and idols.
The final Inca archaeological site to visit outside of Cusco in this 1/2 day Cusco city tour will be Puca Pucara (Quechua language) which means “red fortress.” Known as the Inca checkpoint, from here you may appreciate the vastness of the surrounding mountains.
After you have visited and explored the top attractions around Cusco, it will be time to head back to the city, with a quick stop at one of the local craft markets to enjoy a free cup of coca tea, and learn about alpaca textiles. The tour will end at approximately 6pm.
